Kings of Leon
Early years (1999–2002)
The three Followill brothers spent much of their youth traveling around the Southern United States with their father, Ivan Leon Followill, a United Pentecostal Church preacher and their mother, Betty-Ann, who taught them when they were not in school. Caleb and Jared were both born in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. They all attended Mount Juliet High School. Nathan and Matthew were born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. According to Rolling Stone magazine, "While Leon preached at churches and tent revivals throughout the Deep South, the boys attended services and were occasionally enlisted to bang on some drums. They were either home-schooled or enrolled in small parochial schools at this time. Except for a five-year period when they settled in Jackson, Tennessee, the Followills' childhoods were spent driving through the southern United States in a purple 1988 Oldsmobile, decamping for a week or two wherever Leon was In an

interview with Billboard, Nathan Followill described how the band was formed. "When we signed the deal [with RCA], it was just me and Caleb. The label said, 'We're gonna put you a band together', and we were like, 'We don't want to be Evan and Jaron. We're going to buy our little brother a bass, he's a freshman in high school. Caleb will teach himself the guitar. [Matthew] played guitar when he was 10. I'll play the drums, I played in church when I was little.' They said, 'All right, we'll come down in one month and see you guys.'" Later in the interview the brothers admitted to "kidnapping" their cousin Matthew from his hometown in Mississippi in order for him to join the band. They told his mother that he was only going to be staying for a week and just never let him go home. "We locked ourselves in the basement with an ounce of marijuana and literally spent a month down there. My mom would bring us food down", added Nathan. "And at the end of that month the label people came and we had "Molly's Chambers", "California Waiting", "Wicker Chair" and "Holy Roller Novocaine"."[5]
On January 31, 2010, Kings of Leon took home the Grammy award for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song for "Use Somebody" at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.
A remix album has also been announced by the band, which apparently came to life after Kings of Leon learned that other artists had started working on revisions of the band's songs. Mark Ronson, Kenna, Justin Timberlake, Lykke Li with her cover of "Knocked Up", Pharrell Williams and Linkin Park among others, have been recruited by Kings of Leon and will be contributing to the album.[32]
Come Around Sundown (2010–present)
In May 2010, Nathan Followill reported that the band had been recording in New York City since March 2010, and that, to their surprise, the tracks were coming out "chilled out", "beach-y" and more like their Youth and Young Manhood sound.[33] They had previously said, prior to getting back to the studio, that they would be looking to record a "darker" and "grungier" album.[34] The band's fifth album is called Come Around Sundown and was released on October 18 (UK) / 19 (US), 2010.[35] It was recorded in New York between February and June 2010 with Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King once more at the helm.
In June 2010, the band embarked on a tour visiting over 50 cities in North America and Europe. The tour dates ranged for 4 months, from June 5 to September 23.[36]
The first single from the album, "Radioactive", was released on September 13, 2010,[37] however, it was scheduled to receive its premiere on Australian radio four days earlier. The band released the music video for the song on September 8.[citation needed]

Come Around Sundown’ is none of those things. It’s not a leftfield swerve. It’s a stately modern
rock album that’s so desperate to prove its own authenticity it forgets to be remotely moving. This is music designed to be blasted from drive-time FM radios, and to waft around arenas big enough to have pigeons nesting (and shitting) in the echoing rafters.

Sonically, it consolidates the band’s gradual shift from ramshackle charm to clean-lined grandeur. Guitars twinkle and shimmer, rather than scratch or chug. The album contains one indisputably great song: ‘Back Down South’, a beautifully subtle country-rock stomp that showcases
Kings Of Leon’s knack for conjuring sonic drama from the simplest of ingredients: for the first two and a half minutes it’s just one bass note and one chord.

That track, combined with the going-back-to-your-roots theme of ‘Radioactive’ (“It’s in the water, where you came from”), would suggest ‘Come Around Sundown’ is all about the band reconnecting with the Southern soil after the rootless hedonism explored on ‘Only By The Night’. Fine. That’s a good subject. Trouble is, they don’t see it through.

Caleb Followill has admitted he ad-libbed the lyrics (“I free-floated everything”). In other words: he was on auto-pilot. The frontman always had a conflicted relationship with his own voice. On early albums he deliberately sang indistinctly to obscure the fact his lyrics didn’t mean anything. The point is: he overcame that on ‘Only By The Night’. Say what you like about ‘Sex On Fire’, it is at least about something: a transcendent one-night stand.

Come Around Sundown’, though, represents a return to opacity. Witness a song like ‘The Immortals’, which finds Caleb stretching out those trademark grizzled vowel sounds. “Ride away?” “Right away”?. Something about a rooster? Who knows – he could be singing about Subbuteo in Elvish and we’d be none the wiser.

Ultimately, too many of these tunes are rehearsal room grooves in search of a hook. They’re clearly meant to convey a sense of wide-open highway: the feeling of a band cruising in effortless fourth gear. Actually, it just sounds like they’re spinning their wheels.

Publication plan

Publication Plan
In this lesson I created my publication plan for my magazine.
Title:  senseless
Positioning statement: To fulfil you’re musical needs
Frequency of publication: monthly
Price: £1.99
Distribution: Newsagents and supermarkets.
Rationale: The approach of the magazine is very much from the fans perspective. The magazine will consist of new gigs, interviews with the latest bands, opinion and insights. It will be focused on interviews with bands and the latest styles and music, including free posters.
Style: Informal to relate to the reader and make it more relaxing to read, also using easy vocab and slang. Also with the interviews it will have a main image and short paragraphs with certain quotes larger than the rest (important quotes). Making it easier for the reader to read. Aimed for teenagers from 16-30.

Examples of Rock magazines

Kerrang:

This is my first example of a rock magainze i want to use.

This is the link for the website for Kerrang:

And this is the link for the picture that I got off the kerrang website:http://www.kerrang.com/blog/newissue/

This is my first example of a magazine:
Kerrang publishes 51 issues each year
Kerrang releases a new magazine every 7 days.
The price is around £2.20
It has regular content and feature articles of bands interviews

My second magazine I used to look at for the code and conventions was Rock sound.
This is also the type of magazine I want to create, in the same genre as Kerrang.
This is the link for their website for their magazine:
and this is the link for the picture I got of an example magazine off their website:http://www.rocksound.tv/magazine/article/issue-140-october-10

This magazine is issue 140 on the 10th October.
The price of this magazine is £4.80

My third magazine choice is 'NME'
The link for their website is:
This is also the link for the magazine front cover I choose:
NME comes out every Wednesday
It costs £2.30
The regular and featured articles it is about Klaxons meeting God via drugs, Bombay Bicycle Club unsuccessfully busking in Ibiza, Jack White's war on the internet, Arcade Fire's financial woes, Liam Gallagher revealing his Beady Eye.

MAIN TASK - Initial ideas

This lesson I was told I now have to think of the genre and target audience for my magazine that I want.
The genre of music magazine that I want to do is rock.
My target audience will be from the ages of 15 - 30. It will be targeted mostly for British teenagers and for both boys and girls.

Evaluation

I am pleased with certain aspects of my magazine front cover and contents page. My magazine follows the conventions of a real magazine. I did this by looking at magazines that were well known before I did mine. Looking at the code and conventions of magazine’s that I would need to include on mine. Such as a bar code, price of the magazine, issue date, headlines etc. I also looked at the codes and conventions for a contents page. This gave me an idea of what I wanted my magazine to look like.

The media technologies I used to create this new media were learning to use Photoshop and QuarkXPress. Also I became more familiar using the cameras and what types of shots I needed for a conventional magazine. The shot I used was a medium close up, so you could see the top part of the girl and it was close and clear. This was because I had to enlarge it so it fit the magazine.

My strengths of using the new media was I learnt it rather quickly and enjoyed editing my magazine, so I would teach myself some effects, which helped the outcome of my magazine. Also I think that I handled the camera shots well, as I had planned my magazine and knew what type of shot I wanted (medium close up) and the pose and type of girl (in school uniform) I wanted. I had never used QuarkXPress before, so that was completely new. However I enjoyed learning how to use QuarkXPress and after I had had an introduction I came to grips with it.

My weaknesses for using the new media, was that I think I could have done better on my magazine if I had known more about the software I was using. However after I got used to it and experimented, it did help the outcome. But I would have liked longer to use the new media so I could have learnt more and made it even better. Also I think that when I used to cropping tools, I could have cropped her hair better as I think it looks a bit messy. However as I have not used Photoshop for a while everything seemed new again, so I had to start from the beginning. I feel that if I had more time to do my front cover and contents page it would have been a lot better. But I did spend a lot of my spare time correcting my magazine and I am overall happy with the my front cover and contents page.

In this lesson I learnt how to edit on QuarkXpress passport.
I then used this to make my contents page.

Magazine front cover

After 3 lessons I have completed my magazine
These are the steps I took to get my end result.

Sunday 3 October 2010

Editing my magazine

Now I had taken my pictures for my front cover and contents page, I know had to edit them to create my magazine.
These are the steps I took to create my magazine:

This is when I added my picture

I used the tool 'lasso' to cut the image out

I clicked the mouse with the plus sign on, to move my image onto the background

I used ctrl + t to resize my image onto my background to make it fit better

Here I used the blur tool to make her skin more even.

Here I changed the background using gradiant so it changed from purple to pink
I inserted an image of a barcode and cut it out, then dragged it onto the main image of the magazine
Here I inserted the mast head saying 'FAB' in an eye catching vibrant green, so it stands out

Image for my magazine and contents page

In this lesson I was told I needed to take a photograph for my magazine.
I had already made a draft of what I wanted it to look like so now all I had to do was find a picture that was similar or better than the draft I had drew.

I found a girl and gave her a folder like the one in my draft.

Also I got pictures for my contents page.
